Similar problem, and I believe I've isolated it.  I used CD2USB to make
the USB drive when the usb-creator failed.  The CD2USB had the same
problem, but was more verbose.

The parameter is incorrect.

This is from the ubuntu-9.10-netbook-remix-i386.iso
