Public bug reported:

using alternate disk process upgrade from 6.06 to 6.10 and 6.10 to 7.04
doesnt completely initialize the desktop screen. this appears on this
system (7.04) as a small rectangular patch at upper left. It does
eventually, after a period of use, clear up.

When 6.10 was booted up on two different machines, the screen would
start flipping with rectangular patches.. and when the desktop was
finally achieved the screen appeared to be correct.

I suspect that the problem might be in the initrd image?
