Oh dear, I'm sorry for being "bugging" you again, but the problem is not solved after all. However there was a change in the behaviour using the fresh install: when I plug in the HP, I *do* get sound through the HP but the main speakers still do *not* mute.
I didn't pay enough attention when I looked at it, but it happens that with the HP I need to keep the volume a bit lower and the main speakers are on. I'm really sorry for the confusion. :s In kmix, the "master" switch mutes both ways (HP & main) when off.
