(And bizarrely) I've done two things on this computer. sudo gedit /etc/fstab ... I edited this file, then decided against it, and deleted my change, then saved it (in effect, therefore, re-saving an unchanged file)
...and reported this bug on Launchpad. Either one, or the other, appears to have fixed the problem, and the new kernel now works quite happily.
