I discovered that my laptop was ventilating poorly and CPU core temps
were reaching 90C and higher (!). Hangs were always preceded by
temperature peaks. I opened the laptop, cleaned the fan and vent
ingress, and now use cpu freq scaling more conservatively. I have not
observed additional hanging. I'm left to conclude (with lots of hand
waving) that file corruption is real but occurs only with an overheated
system.

This same system ran jaunty previously without trouble. Therefore I
wonder if there's a problem with karmic kernel trip point defaults (CPU0
is 256C!) or with freq scaling. I'm not using powersaved.
