If Pedro's workaround does not work for you, please try the cairo 1.8.8-2ubuntu1.1 package in karmic-proposed and see if it fixes your PDF printing issue.
Just in case anyone doesn't know how to enable -proposed, its simple: On the System menu, select Administration -> Software Sources. Select the Updates tab and place a tick next to Pre-released updates (karmic- proposed). Then click Close and reload when prompted. Open the Update Manager and deselect all -proposed packages except cairo, and install. -- Evince 2.28.1 can't print pdf files in ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala.
