OK, it is fixed now. It might have been something in .local, but I am not 
totally convinced that the reason for the bug (?) was very specific to my 
configuration. Anyway, since I can't reproduce it now, this bug can probably be 
closed?

For the record, here is what I did:

- look in Edit Menus for the Remote Desktop entry - it was not there
- in Edit Menus I found that gnome-control-center is only disabled and in 
gnome-control-center the Remote Desktop entry appeared (still not in the menu)

I renamed .local to .local.bak and logged out/in. (ah, I should have
written it down, I somehow think I logged out/in twice for some reason)

Remote Desktop showed up in Edit Menues but was disabled - I enabled it.
after another log out/in everything was fine.

- Restore .local by "mv .local.bak .local"
log out/in - still everything ok

I should have looked into .local/share/applications before, but now I only have 
a 
vino-preferences.desktop file there (the time of the file equals the time when 
i enabled it in Edit Menus).
