To launch Firefox, only click on the icon once. Don't double-click like in Windows. If this is not the cause of the problem, then please try starting Firefox by typing firefox in a terminal window and seeing what happens.
If the problem is still occurring, any zombie Firefox processes should be able to be killed by opening the System Monitor, selecting the Processes tab, locating any Firefox entries and right-clicking on them and selecting End Process. If it doesn't disappear after about 10 or 20 seconds, right-click on it again and select Kill Process.
