I also see this behaviour intermittently. How is it not a bug when rhythmbox occasionally just decides not to play any file? I have a feeling it might be something to do with a conflict between rhythmbox and other programs accessing the sound card - if I've had Youtube open in a browser (or similar) then I cannot play music even after the browser has been closed.
