update:
I found that hplip-gui got de-installed as a result of (parts of) q4t 
de-installing during yesterday's upgrade. And since qt4 refused to re-install, 
so did hplip.
Today I did manage to re-install hplip-gui with all dependencies, so my system 
is back to where it should be.
It is still funny that hplip got mangled a bit like that, but hey that's what 
you get when using an alpha version...

Things are working again for now.
