Hi, Thanks for your reply. Problem was that the developer that this laptop was for needed Ubutnu (9.10) on it to go to the clients with so Mint was not an option.
Anyway, I managed to installit anyway. As that safe graphics option was not there on the alternate disk I went off at a tangent. Yet, when I pressed F6 and then ESC, I could edit the boot options. I removed "-- quiet" and replaced it with vga=789.
