Chris, Tried the valgrind:
G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly valgrind -v --tool=memcheck --leak-check=full --num-callers=40 --log-file=valgrind.log /usr/bin/gnome-panel Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running. This is due to gnome-panel already running. When I kill gnome-panel it immediately restarts. I tried kill -9 - it still restarts How can I kill gnome-panel completely to let valgrind launch it - or better, how can I point valgrind at the PID of gnome-panel. Yes, I read the man page for valgrind (well... searched it for PID) but nothing jumped out.
