I'm running Karmic and ran into the 'MapiLogonProvider:MAPI_E_NETWORK_ERROR' issue. I'm a new hire at my company and hit it when setting up my box. Asked Information Services if they were running an OWA front-end on Exchange 2007, which indeed they were, and that's what I was hitting.
I eventually got the address of the backend and was able to login successfully via 'evolution-mapi' version 0.28.2.
