I found the solution to running the commands as root at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo The problem is that you can't run redirection commands as root. The solution was to do this instead:
sudo sh -c "sync; echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace; pm-suspend" I found a "magic number" in the attached dmesg2.txt file. Here's the relevant section: [ 1.105744] PM: Resume from disk failed.
