@Michele, this was already fixed in karmic. You can only pin a package
with synaptic if you start it with administrative privileges. There is
an UI issue in synaptic because you can lock a package as a normal user,
but in fact it does nothing and synaptic doesn't display any error.

If you can reproduce this issue with synaptic started with
administrative privileges, then please attach the file
/var/lib/synaptic/preferences to this report.
