hi, this was caused due to insufficient space left on /boot

as i was unable to run synaptic to remove the old kernels (i was told to
"manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem." which
failed), i just deleted some of the old files in boot:

boot$ sudo rm *2.6.27-11*
boot$ sudo rm *2.6.27-14*

this freed up enough space so that 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' could be
run

i am unsure why such old kernels were kept, i thought those were
automatically cleaned up.
