Eclipse was a fresh install. Somehow it was related to one of the Synaptic gcj* packages. When I used Synaptic PM to completely remove all gcj packages, completely remove eclipse and re-install eclipse, eclipse worked as expected afterwards. I think I had some of the gcj on there before the eclipse install.
