I am experiencing the same problem on Optiplex 960 w/ BIOS A05 (not sure
if there's a more specific version).  This configuration has the NVidia
9300 GE 256MB graphics card.  The fix mentioned in the blog  post did
not work for me, as that option was already unchecked in the BIOS.

I should add that even after installing using the text-based installer
for 9.10, I get this black screen of death when the installed OS boots.
(So this is not limited to the LiveCD.)  When X11/Xorg starts it also
seems to kill my ability to interact with the keyboard (so cannot switch
out to console).

I also tried Ubuntu 8.10 LiveCD with no better luck.  The only OS /
configuration I have so far gotten to work is Fedora 12.  The installer
worked fine (in graphical mode); after installation, though, I had to
install the NVIDIA drivers manually (the kmod-nvidia packages did not
work at all).
