I have the same modem, 9.10 with all the updates, still the E220 is detected as a mass storage unit, and dmesg reports a lots unknown device errors. If I rmmod the usb-storage module then I can connect from the network manager interface with no problems. So I'm pretty sure it is a kernel issue
