>* Is this crash reproducible?

No. I cannot reproduce the error.
But I will later make a fresh installment of Herd 5 and will have a better
chance to test this issue. Gonna test with both nvidia-glx and
nvidia-glx-legacy packages.
----
Is this error related?
$ glxgears
XIO: fatal IO error 22 (Invalid argument) on X server ":0.0"
after 36 requests (36 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
glxgears: xcb_xlib.c:41: xcb_xlib_lock: Assertion `!c->xlib.lock' failed.
Aborted (core dumped)
Does the xorg use the XCB library (the new Xlib replacement)? That would be a
major step forward.

This may not make any sense, but I run:
$ valgrind -v --tool=memcheck --leak-check=full --num-callers=25 --log-
file=valgrind.log glxgears -info
