I followed the procedure shown in comments for Bug #74977 (disabling CONFIG_ATA_PIIX, applying the ide_acpi patch and rebuilding the kernel). I'm now able to suspend and resume successfully with the new kernel. This suggests that the failure to resume is due to the same bug as #74977.
