Hi Seth. Thankyou for filing the new bug report with the requested information. Can you please open a terminal & run the following command "sudo apt-cache policy initscripts" (without the quotes) & post the results back here in this bug report. Also, please try the following command from the terminal "sudo apt-get --reinstall install initscripts" (without the quotes - this will reinstall the "initscripts" package as it may be damaged &/or corrupt). Then try to shutdown to see if this has resolved your issue.
If this does not resolve your problem, it would also be helpful if you could try the following procedure (please ensure you have no programs open as this will hopefully shutdown your computer): 1) From the the desktop hit Ctrl-Alt-F1. 2) Issue the "shutdown command: sudo shutdown -h now" (without the quotes) 3) Hit Alt-F1 4) Do you see any error messages or oddities? If so, can you maybe take a digital photograph of your screen and attach it to this bug report?
