Just noticed something strange - when network-manager has already
connected to a wireless network then unplugging and replugging the
network cable works correctly. Steps:

1. Start machine with wireless networks in range (already configured in
network-manager) and network cable unplugged.
2. Log in and plug network cable in. network-manager notices this and brings up
the wired connection.
3. Unplug the network cable. Machine keeps running and network-manager falls
back to the wireless connection.

To cause the crash:

1. Start machine with cable plugged in but out of range of any configured
wireless networks.
2. Log in and unplug the network cable. Machine hangs and must be powered down
to restart.

To see network-manager not pick up the wired connection:

1. Start machine with cable unplugged and out of range of any configured
wireless networks.
2. Log in and plug cable in. network-manager does not notice this and the wired
network remains down.

if cable isn't plugged when booting; wireless doesn't work at all.
