Ctrl + Alt + BackSpace no longer kills the X server in Karmic, instead
you should try Ctrl + Alt + F1, this will allow you to log into a
terminal. to get my system back i would then type "top" which will
display the most resource abusive programs, normally the culprit of a
freeze like this. You can then press "k" and then the PID number
corresponding to the application that is hanging the system. This will
kill that application. You can then press Ctrl + Alt + F7 to get back to
your first Desktop view.

at the very least once you login you can restart the computer in a more
controlled way. "sudo reboot"

Once you know the application that is freezing up the system we can file
a bug for it.
