After unintentionally botching an ATI driver upgrade earlier this
afternoon, I elected to reinstall Ubuntu. Not Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10
but Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop 64bit, and I saw the same exact error posted
above. Same machine, no hardware changes, I just chose a different
version of Ubuntu 9.10. The 64 bit version of the same error is reported
as bug #595868, mostly because Launchpad did not present information
about this bug entry when I reported the 64 bit instance. Launchpad
isn't matching the strings too well, I see.
BTW: I'm upgrading Grub; I'm in Synaptic. The error occurs in both
instances (UNR and 64) when Synaptic goes to configure Grub-2. You know
the Subroutine events which offers to show me the configuration
differences side by side? If I decide I want to go look at the
differences, the back button is grayed out (dimmed, disabled, whatever
you call it). After seeing the differences between the configurations,
that point is where I should be able to go back with a decision that I
make, but the subroutine is faulty in disabling the back button. The
only choice I have is cancel, and this triggers the cannot configure
subroutine.
HTH.
