My freeze problems went away after this configuration:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "radeon"
Option "DRI" "off"

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"

Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
Now the system is rock solid thought without 3D acceleration, 2D is
working good...
