Public bug reported:

The live-usb is created with my own program (live-usb-installer), but it uses
the same syslinux config as this in ubuntu.
This problem happens on several computers, with several ubuntu 9.10 based
distributions.
It does not happen on every boot, only sometimes.
On some of the computers - more often, and on some - very rarely.
And also happens with "manually" created live-usb - with manually
installed&configured syslinux.
I have not tested with the standard ubuntu usb installer.
The problem can be fixed by switching with ctrl+alt+f1 and typing sudo service
gdm restart
Then the desktop loads.
