Please try the fix proposed in bug 447961. If you are on Karmic, install
the SRU (Stable Release Update) of cups in -proposed as instructed there
and give your feedback. DO NOT modify any config files, like
printers.conf or the *.convs and *.types files.
The problem also occurs in Debian Linux as there the same CUPS package
with the same filters is used. The fix is also uploaded to Debian
unstable.
For analyzing filter chains look into the error_log of CUPS. Set CUPS to
debug logging mode via
cupsctl LogLevel=debug
and send a print job. Then the filter calls get logged in the error_log.
