Public bug reported:

This may or may not actually be kernel related, but I have to choose a
package AFAIK. Also there are possibily related bugs like 402756,
however they are not exactly the same and don't report noticing the
buffer usage.

So,

Over time the memory usage by buffers (e.g. as reported by
/proc/meminfo) grows until swap is consumed (resulting in heavy disk
usage and system slowdowns) until such time as memory is exhausted.

The memory usage is not associated with a particular process, and in
fact memory usage my processes is not all that large (for the size of
memory I have), which is why I am reporting it on the kernel. It is
possible that is in fact a particluar process causing the problem, such
as evolution-exchange, but I have no means of determining that.

The system with 3G of memory lasts about a day before being exhausted
and needing a reboot. The attached meminfo is after a few hours of
operation. Buffers of >1G seems excessive for that case.

This is in Karmic Koala (9.10)
