I can confirm that at least with a live boot cd of 9.10 this situation still exists in both 32bit and 64bit, but as before I only have limited access to this machine. I will attempt to get hold of it again and install 9.10 so that I can try your suggestion. Thank you for your attention in this matter as I was wondering quite where to go with it, beyond waiting for 10.04.
