Not completely sure I have the same problem, but I had issues with a Dell Dimension 2400 that would consistently lock up on boot. Everything worked fine in Jaunty. I even reloaded Karmic from scratch and still have problems. I tried a lot of troubleshooting and the only thing that seems to help for me is to remove the quiet and splash kernel options. Once I do that, it boots up fine & seems to work okay.
