Am I right that this happens only with nVidia's proprietary driver? nVidia plans to drop support for DGA, so the problem would cease to exist. But if this also affects users of other drivers then the installer should detect whether this particular hardware/driver combination works with DGA, and disable/enable the extension with that in mind. This could also be used as a temporary fix while nVidia supports DGA.
