Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-base

I have an intel CH8 HD audio card intergrated into my mainboard. (AKA a
SigmaTel STAC9227)

For some reason I have no volume settings for the microphone on any alsa
mixer, but there is a 'capture' level. I can select between my front
mic, rear mic, and line in. Anything that is on the back of my box will
record silence. I dual boot windows, and the windows side works, so it's
not the hardware. I don't know if this helps but when a sound plays I
usually hear a brief crackle noise over the sound being played (such as
a gaim notification)

** Affects: alsa-driver (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed

Alsa won't record from rear mic, only front.
