Further to previous email, I can confirm that although not visible on the desktop (I have two - I checked both of them), Rhythmbox was still showing as running by the system monitor. Also, having ended the process from the system monitor, I tried starting Rhythmbox again. To cut a long story short, the first time Rhythmbox starts, it is not visible on the desktop, it's only if I try starting it again that Rhythmbox becomes visible (and thus usable.
