I followed the steps above and observed no change in system behavior -
speakers still play normally, headphone jack works, speakers are not
muted when the headphone jack is being used, and microphone input seems
to work as usual.

The last lines of my alsa-base.conf before the edit were the following:

# Power down HDA controllers after 10 idle seconds
options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N

I wasn't sure if I should have added the line as is to the end of the
file or add the model=... to the end of this line, but I tried both ways
and got the same result.

Thanks for working on this bug.  It will be nice to be able to listen to
music in public places when it's fixed.
