For the record:
Hibernation mode 19d 22h, upgrade to 2.6.31-19, reboot, no nm-applet (same as
#7)
$ps -eaf | grep nm-applet
1000      1639  1457  0 17:29 ?        00:00:00 nm-applet --sm-disable
1000     10827  1771  0 23:11 pts/0    00:00:00 grep --color=auto nm-applet
$ ps aux | grep -i nm-applet
1000      1639  0.0  1.4 207872 15040 ?        S    17:29   0:00 nm-applet
--sm-disable
1000     10851  0.0  0.0   7336   752 pts/0    R+   23:12   0:00 grep
--color=auto -i nm-applet

My bet, when resuming from hibernation tomorrow, nm-applet appears
again.
