UPDATE: Since the new kernel didn't show up in the grub boot menu I
tried to do update-grub by hand. It was worse.

update-grub insists in maintaining a menu.lst and seems to ignore
whatever is in the /etc/grub.d directory. Now, my grub boot menu only
has two kernels and the other OSses that are in the disk (Windows &
Ubuntu 9.10 32bit) were ignored.

Maybe the new update-grub is not from the grub2...?
