Thanks. I didn't actually need to reformat the root file system though,
because I had already done that (I partitioned and formatted everything
before going into the Installer). I got things working by executing sudo
when I went to rebuild GRUB. Because I'm a newbie and because of the way
GRUB responds when one attempts to execute commands without the proper
permission I had previously totally missed this.
