yes i tried modem-modeswitch before installing usb_modeswitch i tried to plug the 3G modem in & wait until it switches to USB MODEM, but it doesn't switch,, i tried to eject it and unmount but no success, then i installed the latest usb_modeswitch_data,then i worked correctly,now i just plug in the usb modem & it switches from mass storage to usb_modem easily, we hope that usb_modeswitch be included by default,because alot of people are using 3G modems with Memory card slot & they are not familiar with installing usb_modeswitch and stuff !
