I had the same problem (at Feisty 2.6.20-9-generic). It's connected with 'brltty' which is generating the conflict. Below I've attached part of 'dmesg' log:
[22800.409873] ftdi_sio 1-9:1.0: FTDI USB Serial Device converter detected [22800.409882] drivers/usb/serial/ftdi_sio.c: Detected FT232BM [22800.410061] usb 1-9: FTDI USB Serial Device converter now attached to ttyUSB0 [22802.361554] usb 1-9: usbfs: interface 0 claimed by ftdi_sio while 'brltty' sets config #1 [22802.366496] ftdi_sio ttyUSB0: FTDI USB Serial Device converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0 [22802.366514] ftdi_sio 1-9:1.0: device disconnected Problem can be solved by removing 'brltty' with apt/synaptic, eg.: sudo apt-get remove brltty -- FTDI (USB Serial) failure.
