The plot thickens: I did a dist-upgrade this morning (US CST morning),
and restarted: no usplash anymore, not even as we had when this bug was
opened.

I can see the monitor trying to go graphical, and reverting back to text
mode; a message is flashed on the screen stating that usplash could not
find an "usable theme for 1280x1024", and "screen init failed". On
reboot, no usplash.

Removed /etc/usplash.conf, rebooted. No usplash image, but a nice video
test pattern appeared on shutdown.

Recreated usplash.conf with a resolution of 1024x768 (down from the
previously working 1280x1024, and rebooted.

Same messages as before.

Looking at dpkg.log I see an update, this morning, to kubuntu-artwork-
usplash 1:7.04-27 (from 1:7.04-26), soI downgraded to -26, recovered my
initial usplash config (at 1280x1024 resolution), and rebooted.

I am now back to the reporter's initial problem: on shutdown just the
bar, no image, on usplash.

Well, right now, I am setting it as confirmed for usplash.
