Your system was installed as Ubuntu 9.10, which means it would have been
installed with grub-pc (grub2) originally. The error message shows that
you have uninstalled grub-pc in favor of grub1. You should run 'sudo
apt-get install grub-pc' from a terminal to restore the recommented boot
loader.
