Verified that with no xorg.conf file it loaded with XAA.
Enabled compiz and adjusted xorg.conf to have (with still using
radeon.modeset=0):

This does fix the screen corruption, but X is painfully slow. Eg, resizing a
firefox window with nothing else open takes seconds.
