** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Just installed Karmic from RC desktop CD.
Install goes fine, the live CD boots and X works with no issues in the
install process. Once the install is finished, we go for first reboot.
All seems normal until GDM tries to load. At this point in time, I get the
mouse cursor and sometimes de loading icon, and the screen looses signal and
the same thing starts over again in an infinie loop. At a guess, I'd say xorg
crashes when launched by GDM.
Immediate consequence is that I can not finish the install of Karmic on this
machine (that's using ubuntu since years) so it's critical.

If I trigger it just before gdm tries to load, I can get into a terminal.
I've tried successfully to run 'startx', there Gnome loads up. All attempts to
restart GDM result into the same infinite loop.
Since the i915 module doesn't seem to be correctly loaded, I tried Insmod
like this : insmod -f
/lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko. Returns
error "-1 Unknown symbol in module".
modprobe i915 returns a Fatal error : "Error inserting i915
(/lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko): No such
device.

My guess is that there is something wrong in that package.
