I agree with you and confirm this bug.
Looking a packages.debian.org is see the debian/unstable package and binary
have been renamed to just thunderbird on 28 Feb 2006.
Probably the profile directory has changed in debian package too, I have no
debian/unstable installed to check if .thunderbird or .mozilla/thunderbird is
used.
Please merge these changes into Ubuntu Edgy.
