string-escape is a built-in codec in Python, so this traceback made me
suspicious that it was a lower-level problem. Sure enough, there's lots
of this kind of thing in your syslog:
Feb 2 16:36:41 ubuntu kernel: [ 164.136790] SQUASHFS error:
squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0x27ba812e
Feb 2 16:36:41 ubuntu kernel: [ 164.136810] SQUASHFS error: Unable to read
data cache entry [27ba812e]
Feb 2 16:36:41 ubuntu kernel: [ 164.136816] SQUASHFS error: Unable to read
page, block 27ba812e, size ec41
This indicates that there's been a problem reading from the CD. This is
generally due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, rather than being an
installer bug as such (indeed, the installer can do very little about
it). It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower
speed, or to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often
available from electronics suppliers).
