1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -> 
About Ubuntu.
You are using Ubuntu 9.10- the Karmic Koala - released in October 2009 and 
supported until April 2011.

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename' 
or by checking in Synaptic.
$ apt-cache policy gnome-control-center
gnome-control-center:
  Installed: 1:2.28.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:2.28.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:2.28.1-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages

3) What you expected to happen
Navigate to System > Preferences > Startup Applications.
Uncheck Gnome Login Sound
...I should not hear anything when the computer boots to the login screen.

4) What happened instead
...I hear the "drum beats at login...
