Yes, I had no update capability for a long time. The update manager would show updates available yet give errors & not do the updates. I have an Acer Aspire One, I noticed that what happens when I shut down sometimes & close the lid this gadget does not really shut down it freezes. So I think due to errors on shut down & Ubuntu trying recovery mode in past this no shut down corrupted a few things & resulted in other strange behaviors. I could not think of anything to do other than re-install Ubuntu back then. So after fresh install everything just clicked & went right. Still to this day this AAO when shut down will freeze as lid is closed, ..... Sometimes not each time. This is a flaw in hardware I think as to Acer's fault most likely. Albeit I get freezes still sometimes that issue of corrupted files has not reoccurred. I'm buying a Asus UL80vt this week, has decided Atom CPU gadgets just don't do or work well, although cheap & small it is in my opinion an Ultra portable laptop is by far better than netbooks despite costing somewhat more.
