Hm...okay. It looks like the problem was that the newest linux-headers package wasn't installed when my kernel was upgraded.
This could be made much more user-friendly by, for instance, suggesting in the error that I don't need the kernel source but rather just the headers. Or by automatically installing the headers for me; afaict, there's no headers-equivalent to the linux-virtual package.
