Okay - this is the wrong place to file this bug report. Still, you might be
interested in how I solved it for future reference. On the other hand, I don't
know _why_ it was solved just that it works now. I suspect that something got
defined wrong, but I've no idea what nor how it happened.
What I did was install the new release of gedit (2.28.3) but that did not fix
it. Then I reinstalled all the GTK+ libs and other bindings that I could
discover. Still did not work. Finally, I located a gconf command line
configuration from one of the plugin developers which purported to install his
plugin. By changing the plugin name in this small script I was able to install
a couple of plugins that had failed before. When then trying to run the
__init__.py from the command line it now no longer reported not being able to
find gedit it would now just hang at the until I cut it off. I'm no programmer,
but I suspect that something had gotten misdefined, though I don't know what or
how.
Anyway, my own system is now working so there is now reason to file a bug
report but if it fails in the future, I report it to bugzilla.

Thanks for your efforts.
